Book Review - The Great Gilly Hopkins
Ian brought this book home from school as class reading. I spent Saturday morning reading it instead of doing my Saturday job. Although I did enjoy the characters in the book and found the storyline interesting I am wondering what the teacher has in mind for discussions in the class. I think the overall theme of the book could cause a lot of emotional upset to kids in the class who are adopted or in foster care. In the US this book has been banned in some areas for it's racist parts and foul language. I'm not as concerned about that as the overall theme of the book. I think most kids will just find it an interesting story but there are some kids that might find it hitting them harder than that and I wonder if the teacher will be able notice/understand/handle these situations. The issues of abandonment and attachment are not easy issues and I don't think most teachers are experienced enough to deal with them in the classroom.
